Dryer Vent Cleaning Prevents Clothes Dryer Fires!

Dryer Vent Cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires. Over 15,000 dryer fires are reported annually. Failure to clean dryer vents is the cause of most dryer related fires.

Home, yard and appliance maintenance are a never ending project; there is always something that requires a homeowner’s attention. Whether for looks, durability, safety or efficiency, all home maintenance is essential to keep things in working order.

The most common appliance maintenance issue often overlooked by homeowners is the clothes dryer. Most people are unaware that the clothes dryer is one of the most likely appliances to cause a fire if not properly maintained.

Unless you’re one of the unfortunate people who have experienced a dryer fire you probably haven’t given it much thought. Dryer fires are devastating; most of them can be prevented with proper dryer vent cleaning and maintenance.

Your dryer duct system removes the moisture, heat and lint from your laundry as it dries. If you have a gas dryer, it also removes gas by-products that you don’t want venting into your home as they pose a carbon monoxide risk.

Approximately 60% of the lint is caught in the lint screen that should be cleaned after each load of laundry. The other 40% escapes into your dryer duct system where it builds up and eventually obstructs airflow required by your clothes dryer.

Sticky, moist lint attracts more lint. It can build up quite quickly. Lint is combustible; a dryer fire will spread very quickly. A professional dryer vent cleaning specialist can inspect your system to be sure it meets today’s safety codes. Not only is dryer vent cleaning essential; proper installation, using the right materials is important to ensure safety.

Dryer Vent Cleaning and Electric Dryer Problems

Dryer vent cleaning is the number one prevention of clothes dryer fires. When dryer vent systems become clogged with lint, air flow is restricted, causing the dryer motor to labor. As a result, clothes take longer to dry and you will experience higher energy bills.

When a clothes dryer isn’t functioning properly dryer vent cleaning cures the problem in most cases. There are other things that can go wrong with a clothes dryer, but lack of air flow is the number one problem with malfunctioning dryers.

On a recent job the customer had reported a heating failure. The technician replaced the element which solved the problem, but only for a very short time. The problem recurred after just a couple loads of laundry. Just before the failure, the customer stated that they heard a scratching noise coming from the dryer but the technician failed to find the cause.

Electric dryers are simple in design. They require an element to provide heat and blowers to provide air flow. If the heating element is not functioning properly it can overheat and cause a fire. When a customer complains that their dryer is not getting clothes dry, this is one of the first things an appliance repair specialist will check.

Since I was called to the customer’s home soon after they had an appliance repair technician provide service, I told them I was going to check for a venting problem. I assumed a complete dryer vent cleaning was required. Part of dryer vent cleaning service is to clean inside the dryer too.

I took the drum out to check for the source of the scratching noise and noticed the bearings were worn, causing friction due to lack of lubrication. On this model, once the bearing has worn the back of the drum came into contact with the heating element causing arcing and breaking the new element.

The dryer worked fine after installing a new element and bearing kit. I cleaned up the metal shavings and lint, and then put the dryer back together. This took care of the heating problem.

Being in the dryer vent cleaning business, I informed the customer that they were lucky a spark didn’t cause the lint inside the dryer to ignite. They were happy to allow me to perform a complete dryer exhaust cleaning to be sure the dryer was getting proper air flow to work efficiently.

Dryer Vent Cleaning and Green Ideas for Consumers in St. Paul, Minnesota

Attention Residents with Clothes Dryers in St. Paul, MN

Your clothes dryer is among the top 5 energy consumers in your home. Here are some tips for saving energy when drying laundry. Whether your dryer is gas or electric, both operate the same, drying your laundry by heating and tumbling. Both require proper air flow to avoid over-working and to accomplish this task efficiently.

Dryer Vent Cleaning tips for St. Paul, Minnesota Consumers

Proper dryer vent cleaning and maintenance ensures proper air-flow, which is most vital to avoid overworking the clothes dryer and to prevent a potential fire hazard. When the dryer vent system is clogged with lint, it will obstruct air-flow, cause severe overheating, and eventually, a fire. Dryer vent cleaning, by a dryer vent specialist, is recommended at least once a year; more often if you have a large family.

Maintain the Lint Filter, says Dryer Vent Wizard of St. Paul, MN

Most everyone knows to clean the lint filter after every load; however, few are aware that the lint screen should be washed in warm, soapy water periodically. The use of fabric softener sheets, like Bounce, can cause a film to build up on the lint screen. This will restrict air flow needed for your dryer to work efficiently.

Do Full Loads – Don’t Over-load, as advised by St. Paul Dryer Vent Cleaning Company

Try to only do full loads of laundry; small loads waste a lot of energy that could be used for washing and drying a full load. Be careful not to over load as this will cause the washer and dryer to overwork; additional wear and tear leads to the expense of repairing and/or replacing your appliances.

Separate Light and Heavy Weights

Heavier items, such as jeans and towels naturally take longer to dry than lighter weight items like T-shirts. It has been suggested to dry the different weights separately, but you can also start them together, and stop the dryer to remove the lighter items that are dry, and then take advantage of the already heated drum to dry the rest. This way, you aren’t allowing a cool down between loads; you save the energy that would otherwise be used to heat the drum again.

About Dryer Sensors and Energy Saving Features on Newer Clothes Dryers

Clothes dryers have become more energy efficient as most new models have dryness sensors so that the dryer automatically moves on to the cool-down cycle or turns off when laundry is dry. The sensors prevent over-drying of clothes which prolongs the life of your clothing while saving energy.

Solar Drying is Free in St. Paul, Minnesota

When the weather is right, hang laundry outdoors and let Mother Nature’s sun and breeze dry your laundry free. This can be inconvenient for some, but even if you just hang a small amount, like sheets and towels, you will be saving energy.

Clothing Rods are Popular Money Savers in St. Paul, Minnesota

Clothing rods are good for use indoors or outdoors. The clothing rod is a great money saver. You can dry your laundry for a short time, to remove wrinkles, remove your laundry when it is still damp and hang to finish drying.

Your clothes dryer is one of the top energy consumers in your home. Reducing the energy cost of doing laundry will help save money on utility bills. Proper appliance maintenance is also a major money saver, saving on utility bills, and appliance repair bills. A well maintained appliance will work more efficiently and have less risk of failure.
